Reduce Swelling After Rhinoplasty

Swelling Is A Natural Consequence of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, as with all other surgical procedures, involves temporary side effects. One of them is swelling. If after your nose job you see that some parts of your face, especially the areas in and around your nose, are swollen, do not fret. It is perfectly normal since your face underwent a lot of trauma in the form of incisions and the removal of some nasal structures like cartilage, bones, and skin.

Expected Duration Of Swelling

Swelling around the nose and eye area will start immediately after the nose job. Within the first day, it will continue to increase. It will get even worse as time goes by and reach its peak after two or three days. After a week or two, most swelling should have disappeared. In general, the remaining subtle swelling would not be detected by other people. It will only be noticeable to you and your doctor. This slight swelling will remain for several months. If excessive swelling and redness persists after a week, you should consult your doctor as this may be a sign of complications.

How To Reduce Swelling

Swelling after a nose job cannot be avoided. The only thing you can do to make yourself feel better is to attempt to alleviate the swelling. Here are a few tips on how you can minimize the puffiness of your facial area:
1. Avoid ingesting alcoholic drinks at least five days before your operation.
2. Avoid taking aspirin or ibuprofen at least ten days before the date of surgery.
3. Do not take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs at least seven days before the nose job.
4. As soon as you possibly can, start walking after your nose job. Not only will this reduce swelling, but it will also lower the risk of blood clots developing.
5. Eat a low-sodium diet.
6. Keep your head elevated at all times, even while you are sleeping.
7. Avoid bending in such a way that your head is below your heart.
8. Apply a cold compress around your nose area, not directly on it. You may use packs of frozen peas or mixed vegetables instead of an ice compress.
9. Even if it feels slightly uncomfortable, do not make an attempt to remove the nasal tape and splints placed by the doctor. This will help your nose maintain its new shape and reduce swelling as well.
10. You may buy homeopathic medicines such as Bromelain and Arnica Gel. But before you do so, make sure to discuss this with your surgeon. Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory formula that contains the proteolytic enzyme of pineapples. Arnica is an herb that has been used for centuries in Europe to treat swelling and bruising.
